Video highlights of the 2021 harvest

The 2021 harvest at Château de Sales took place between 24 September and 7 October. The first tastings are highly promising, heralding a high-quality vintage.
Many thanks to all our loyal pickers for their cheerfulness and hard work.

Leaf removal (on the afternoon-sun side of the vine)

Leaf removal on the afternoon-sun side of the vine involves stripping off all or some of the leaves in the cluster zone.
The aim of the operation is to improve air circulation in the clusters. It also encourages better phenolic maturity (tannins) and reduces the risk of disease.
Generally performed in late August, it completes the work carried out when lateral shoots were removed in the early summer.

Many thanks Cédric Mauguet (Vineyard team manager – Château de Sales)!

The removal of lateral shoots

Once shoots have been thinned, the trellis has been raised and the vines have been trimmed, summer starts with the removal of lateral shoots. These secondary shoots grow between the leaf and the main shoot in front of the clusters, on the side of the rising sun. Removing them ensures that air can circulate in the vines, helps the grapes to ripen and limits the risk of disease.

Many thanks Frédéric Laborde (Technical Director – Château de Sales)!

The 2020 vintage: excellence and purity of fruit

Château de Sales has produced an exceptional 2020 vintage, thanks to weather conditions which particularly favoured its terroir.

It is a wine with highly complex aromas and flavours, especially black fruit and fresh fruit with notes of liquorice, and a lovely, full-bodied, creamy texture. The refined, silky tannins caress the palate, ushering in a long and appealing finish.

Château de Sales 2020 stands out for the smoothness, elegance, freshness and purity of its fruit.

Have you ever heard of “the angels’ share”?

It is an expression used to describe the alcohol that evaporates from barrels during maturing. The story goes that a priest coined the expression after finding that his barrel of maturing wine had lost some of its contents even though it was perfectly sealed. He concluded that the angels had taken their share. In order to make up for the loss and prevent the wine from oxidizing, the barrels are topped up every couple of weeks.

Le Cordon Bleu Paris

On 26 February, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, a famous Culinary and Hospitality Management institure,  for a visit of Château de Sales. We wish them every success and thank Clément Gauthier for this great initiative.
